CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: J Thomas Photography
J Thomas Photography went live on the Internet in February 2007. The intention of the new website was to attract new customers in the flooded Utah Valley wedding photography market. The draw of Free Engagement photography – no questions asked – was the main selling point of the company. Once the site was finished under two URL's, including www.jthomasphotography.net, Joel, who founded and runs the company, put an ad in the BYU Daily Universe for one week, then sat back and waited for the calls to come.
And waited.
It didn't really happen. Every now and again he would receive a call, but over the course of the spring and summer his grand idea did not amount to much business.
In May 2007 Joel began working at Main10 as a Graphic Designer, but still held some hope for his photography business. As he learned the basics and workings of Search Engine Marketing (SEO), he re-wrote some of the content for his photography site, and spent a few hours each month trying to build up his search engine rankings.
It worked.
For some keywords he soon found himself on the first page of the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP), and others were just a few pages back. He's still optimistic about those because if you take into consideration the amount of Wedding Photography websites out there, that's impressive progress for just employing some SEO techniques. He also tried his hand at Pay-per-click marketing, and did pretty well generating traffic with that.
However, even with the increased traffic, the actual business didn't increase.
One Saturday morning Joel was reviewing his Analytics and discovered that while his website had a great design, the pictures weren't obviously accessible, and people weren't making it to the photo galleries. Right away he set off to fix this, and put his galleries and showcases front and center for every visitor to see. Instantly the calls started coming.
This is referred to as Conversion Rate Management, and is the process of finding those things on the site that aren't working quite right, and changing them so that a company can more easily turn casual visitors into paying customers. This can include various testing and tracking procedures to discover what is working and what isn't, and can take some time, but is a critical component of an online marketing campaign.
Finally, after a year of tweaks and changes, and a few hundred dollars spent on Pay-per-click advertising, J Thomas Photography started to generate new leads. And all it required was the simple SEO basics that Joel applied to the website.
Today, Joel gets several calls a week for his photography services and spends $0 on marketing. His simple SEO tactics learned at Main10, as well as a good year of web presence, has enabled him to utilize the power of Search Engine's to generate traffic and leads.
